+년 공개된 GM에서는 확장 없이 128개의 악기만 사용한다. 그러나 GM2/GS/XG와 같은 확장 규격에서는 같은 Program 번호에도 여러 변형(variation)을 둔다. 그래서 Bank Select(CC0/32)로 어느 뱅크의 변형 음색을 쓸 것인지를 지정하고, 그 다음에 Program Change를 보내야 최종 음색이 확정된다.
